Loosening Our Grip
Loosening Our Grip
Recently, my wife and I have downsized, moving to a place less than half the size of our former home. Decluttering, simplifying, and giving to bless others have been recurring themes. While it’s been a freeing, yet fatiguing, experience, we still have more than we need.
A danger we’ve seen in our lives is to be defined by what we have. Bowing at the altar of accumulation, there’s always a desire for more. We end up loving the things of this world, finding our significance in them, only to discover they don’t satisfy. Having one more toy doesn’t bring lasting contentment to a child.
Downsizing has forced us to loosen our grip on possessions. Our stuff is not as valuable as we thought. We can live with less.
May Jesus be the focus of our affections. He showed riches come from poverty, purpose from simplicity. Mammon is a tyrannical master, leaving us empty. May God help us loosen our grip on the things of this world, giving us a longing and desperation for more of Christ.
“We fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal” (2 Cor 4:18).
